Spread the Gospel like Peanut Butter and Jelly

We are taught to spread the Good News. God’s Word says to, “Go  into all the world, and preach the gospel to every
creature.”  Mark 16:15 .  I don’t know about you, but most of my life, when I hear this verse or message I feel guilty. I start begging God not to send me to Africa. Then I feel bad for not wanting to go to Africa. But I’ve realized something: Not every Christian is called to Africa and this verse doesn’t say anything about Africa at all.  I have never seen the verse that says, ” If thou love me, thou shalt go to Africa. ”   If God does ever call me there, I’m sure it would be a wonderful challenging experience. But my point here, is that I’m pretty sure Jesus didn’t mean we are all called to be traveling World missionaries.

This might shock you but,  there are Christians that live all over the World.  There are Christians who live in Africa,  Japan,  Chilie, and Washington, whom God is calling to share the Gospel with those around them.  Yes God can call you there. You may have a certain set of skills or message needed somewhere far away. But if you aren’t feeling this super excitement about being a missionary, it doesn’t mean you need to suck it up and get on a plane.  Find a way to spread the Good news right where you are. The work place, school, family, friends, the coffee shop, the bar.

If you are a Christian, but you don’t want to be a missionary, then too bad because you are already one. But a missionary isn’t always that person your church is supporting in a far away land.  We are missionaries right where we are.  Use whatever gift or passion you have to share the good news of God’s grace. Share your testimony to tell His story.  Tell about His love  through writing, art, music,  dance, or just plain old fashion conversation.

Yes, God may call you somewhere you don’t want to go. But sometimes are hearts aren’t ready. We are stubborn. I’m not proud of my reaction to Jesus’ command to preach the good news.  But I don’t think we need to feel guilty about not  being World mission focused, because we are all called to different people. Start with those around you and be open to God’s calling. God will change your heart and one day you will find your self somewhere you never thought you would go, and you will see your heart has changed in the process.  The more we follow the Spirit’s leading in each step, the softer our hearts become so we are ready to go when God tells us to take bigger risks.

Whatever you are doing with your life now, preach the good news.  We make it so complicated and daunting. But it comes down to speaking right where you stand; loving right where you are; and living our your faith in the day-to-day decisions.

I went to a Christian writer’s conference and one of the speakers said, ” Every Word for Christ. Every word for Mission. Every word you write represents our Lord.”   Let’s be mission minded in all we do and this will spread the Good News. This will make disciples. This will change the world.
